Abstract

France, Italy, Greece, The Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Ireland are performing joint research on pilot greenhouses, with the aim of improving integrated control in protected crops and phytosanitary defence. The following environments are investigated: closed (greenhouse), semi-open (plastic tunnel), open (plastic shelter), plastic greenhouses not heated artificially, and glass hothouses. The study comprises also the toxicological aspects of vegetables for human consumption. The general situation existing today in the management of phytosanitary defence is summarized with a view to principal pests and diseases, host-plant relationships, pest populations, and the efficiency and limits of biological and bio-technical methods.
