Abstract

These proceedings of an EC expert meeting are subdivided into three main themes: insects and mites, diseases and weeds, and strategies of integrated pest management. Recommendations derived from the discussions are included. The objective was to improve the cultivation of vines by means which do not disturb the vine environment or cause undesired side effects. Profound alterations in the ecosystem of the vineyard came into evidence, e.g. in the appearance of the harmful phytophages due to indiscriminate and untimely use of certain pesticides and the reappearance of serious calamities with the spread of epidemiological elements. Revision of the principal pests and diseases in the European environment focused on the prevention of damages and the improvement of the treatments in use.
