EUROPEAN LIBRARY COOPERATION - AN EC STANDPOINT
The cause and context of the attention now paid by the European Commission to library cooperation issues will be outlined and the results of the work carried out in the last 18 months will be briefly commented on and assessed. Some conclusions will be drawn from the Hearing on Libraries in the EC held in February 1987 in Luxembourg. On the basis of both the Hearing and the knowledge of the situation of libraries (especially with respect to the use of new technologies) gathered to date, some ideas will be developed on how library cooperation could be furthered at Community level and the kind of role the Commission could realistically play in this process through a dedicated plan of action.
