Abstract

National Reports, technical papers and the discussion at the Workshop highlighted the variety of relevant measures available in Member States, ranging from the legal protection of nature reserves to voluntary measures to safeguard areas of scientific and landscape value. Much interest was focused on the recently established Environmentally Sensitive Areas, not least due to the visit to a recently designated ESA. The range of national measures available clearly affects the extent and approach to protection and hence the identification of research topics. This Workshop was an effective way to share experience between Member States, and the Commission should take further opportunities to use this approach in a selective manner. The Workshop reviewed relevant research already underway in Member States, some of which was previously unknown to participants. It is necessary to ensure that there is a greater mutual awareness of relevant work in Member States.
