Abstract

This study deals with a new, emerging category of workers in advanced knowledge based economies the brainworkers. The basic function of their job is to handle complex information processes and to translate them into efficient information systems responding to the needs of the organisation within which they work. Brainworkers can also be defined as systems innovators. The report presents the results of an empirical survey and personnel case profiles in several European countries geared to verify the hypothesis on the emergence and future growth of this new category of workers. It describes the main features of the brainworkers and traces their education and professional career. The report underlines the inadequacies of present university and higher education systems to cope with the increasing demand for brainworkers.
