THE ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH ACTIVITIES OF THE JOINT RESEARCH CENTRE OF THE COMMISSION OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES. SOME TECHNOLOGICAL ASPECTS
Environmental Research activities at the Joint Research Centre of the Commission of the European Communities which are related to new technological developments are described. These are in the field of environmental monitoring Tunable Diode Lasers (TDL) which have a large potential for detecting atmospheric trace gases at ppb level with a high specificity, accuracy and time resolution and a Mobile unit equipped with optical remote sensors, ground level sensors, onboard data acquisition and display systems. In the field of Air Pollution Abatement a recently developed flue gas desulphurisation process ISPRA MARK 13A is presented which allows to produce marketable sulphuric acid and hydrogen instead of gypsum as waste product. For Environmental Management purposes the Ispra Risk Management System IRIMS was developed which integrates data bases of environmental relevance and simulation models through an intelligent interface for the immediate operational use of decision makers.
