Abstract

The parametric studies complement the Round Robin tests. Several important parameters became evident during the PISC I programme and the importance of six groups were readily identified. Of these six, three groups of parametric studies have been defined as being a necessary part of the PISC II programme. For each of these studies a leader has been nominated to co-ordinate the elaboration of the detailed programme. P1 Defect position and geometry. The effect of defect position and characteristics has been investigated to improve the understanding of the Round Robin results. Defect parameters such as : shape, position (depth), height, inclination and surface roughness were studied using a number of special test blocks. P2 Equipment characteristics. Under this heading the effect of different equipment characteristics on the reliability of the NDT results were studied. Electronic circuit parameters and different types of probes were examined for ultrasonics, eddy currents and other special techniques. P3 Cladding characteristics. This study was aimed at assisting evaluation of the RRT results, in particular to explain inconsistencies and limitations which may be attributed to the cladding. For this reason, the programme was confined to the types of cladding used on the Round Robin plates.
