A DISTRIBUTED ELECTRONIC MAIL SYSTEM FOR THE EUROPEAN INSTITUTIONS
This paper describes the INSEM project (INterinstitutional Service for Electronic Mail), which has been established by the European Institutions as part of the INSIS (INterinstitutional System for Integrated Services) programme. The background to the project is first considered. The European Institutions are briefly reviewed, and the aims of the INSEM project summarised. The guidelines which apply to information technology and telecommunications services within the European Institutions are examined. The standards applicable to the mail service are reviewed. The two phases of the INSEM project are considered. Finally some considerations for the future are examined.
