Abstract

This paper describes a technological processor, EDM process-planner, and NC post-processor for programming NC-controlled production machines, especially Electro Discharge Machines by using off-the-shelf commercial CAD/CAM systems. Input to the program are one or more CL- files of any CAD/CAM system, a technological data file and a machine data file. The technological processor creates a new CL-file in which all EDM-specific aspects are added. Special calculations are executed, such as toolpath corrections to improve geometrical accuracy when cutting small fillets and sharp corners. The NC post-processor creates geometrical NC-programs, while the process-planner creates technological NC- programs. Such a technological NC-program controls the machining conditions (generator settings) and may contain commands to execute other programs, e.g. geometrical NC- programs.
