Abstract

Different liquid breeder materials have been compared, considering that the performance of a liquid breeder blanket depends on: the breeding blanket design, the efficiency of the tritium extraction system, the operation limits set by the breeder, the coolant and containment materials and compatibility between them. Relatively high mass transfer rates were observed in eutectic Pb-17 Li-based blankets. Strong magnetic fields acting on the liquid metal suggest to opt for the self- cooled liquid metal blanket. Tritium can be recovered from the liquid metals through gas phase extraction using solid getters and cold trapping. Liquid blankets not based on the Pb-17 Li eutectic or pure lithium presents less advantages. Alternative materials: molten lithium salts are still being investigated. An aqueous self- cooled blanket based on the use of water with relatively small amounts of dissolved lithium compounds has also been proposed. Compatibility with the containment material appears to be a most important feature to be developed also in the alternative fluid breeder materials.
