ADVANCES IN THE ELECTROLYSIS OF TRITIATED WATER FOR ITS APPLICATION TO A FUSION PLASMA PROCESSING PLANT
The exhaust plasma processing scheme, proposed a few years ago as an alternative to the TSTA plant in operation at Los Alamos (N.M.), USA, required further research on some topics such as a low liquid inventory electrolytic cell and the types of separator or membrane resistent to beta radiation. Moreover, it was suggested that the value of the separation factors among H-2, D-2, T-2 should be checked during the electrolysis by using different cathode materials in an alkaline medium. The results of the experimental work carried out on these topics have shown the feasibility of the process although some improvements are still possible as far as the optimization of the separators and the design of the electrolytic cells are concerned.
