Abstract

Some current issues of particular interest in the pressurised thermal shock (PTS) research have been tackled and reviewed in the paper (with no pretension to be exhaustive or to claim that chosen issues are the most important ones). The issues regard application of damage mechanics, fracture mechanics and artificial intelligence (including the treatment of uncertainties in the PTS analysis and experiments). They have in common importance for further understanding of crack behaviour and of component and system response in PTS conditions. The sample cases are taken from the research programmes of MPA Materialpr"ufungsanstalt Stuttgart, Germany, and of the JRC Joint Research Centre.
