Abstract

The influence of a separatrix on ideal MHD ballooning stability has been investigated for a class of quasi-circular plasmas with aspect ratio of 3.7 with variable current profiles. Self-consistent equilibria were generated with a given flux-average current profile and a flat pressure profile in a fixed central region. The pressure gradient was pushed iteratively in the outer region until it reached the first stability limit increased progressively, if there was coalescence of the first and second stability region, until numerical difficulties arised. The dependence of the coalesced region on the various parameters (current density at the edge, total current, poloidal location of the X-point) is shown.
