DATA SYSTEM FOR THE STUDY OF DEMAND FOR INTERREGIONAL PASSENGER TRANSPORT
From 1984 to 1988 seven European countries (Belgium, Finland, France, the Federal Republic of Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland) and the European Communities undertook under the auspices of COST (European cooperation in the field of scientific and technical research), a joint research project on the definition of a data system for interregional passenger transport demand. The overall project was directed by a Management Committee on which the seven participating countries as well as the Commission of the European Communities were represented. Working groups were made responsible for the various themes of the project. Work was carried out in four phases: item"A:" Determining and classifying, in order of importance, the main national and international objectives of the socio-economic research into interregional passenger transport. item"B:" Defining the basic data required for the research work recommended in the first phase and classifying the basic requirements which the data must satisfy. item"C:" Assessing the existing data collection systems and estimating how far the results obtained satisfy the basic requirements defined in the second phase. item"D:" Drawing up a report for those responsible for data collection, making a number of practical proposals to ensure a closer match between data availability and research requirements.par The final report presents the results of work on the themes studied in the project.
