Abstract

This publication is a collation of papers presented at a contractors' meeting of geochemists, organized by the Commission of the European Communities on 5 November 1986. A major part of the volume deals with water-rock interactions, a combined study by the universities of Antwerp, Karlsruhe, Paris VII and the British Geological Survey. Reactions between single crystals and also granites and waters have been studied at different temperatures and pressures. The dissolution behaviour is discussed as well as the formation of secondary minerals. Another topic is the behaviour of clay containing sandstones in various aqueous media. The transport of clay particles through the sandstone is described as well as the swelling and plugging of pores. The 3He/4He ratio in the helium contained in geothermal fluids or vapours gives an indication in how far these media are influenced by mantle effects. The higher the 3He content the higher the mantle contribution to the helium content. The isotopic ratio has been measured in various basins in Europe and is used together with other parameters to model the reservoir.
