Abstract

The addition of Na, Li or Ca to Sm-20-3 catalysts has been found to have a major effect on the activity and selectivity of these materials for the oxidative coupling of methane to ethane and ethylene. The effect of the concentrations of these promoters on the behaviour of the catalysts in the temperature range 600circC to 850circC is described and it is shown that the promoters can have a marked effect on the phase transition of the Sm-20-3 from cubic to monoclinic; this phase transition can have a very detrimental effect on the behaviour of the resultant catalyst.
