CONTRAST AGENTS FOR MRI TISSUE CHARACTERIZATION - BASIC PRINCIPLES AND RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Within the activities of the EEC Concerted Research Project on Identification and characterization of biological tissues by NMR', carried out under the auspices of the BME Group, EEC Committee on Medical and Public Health Research, a topical workshop was held from 19 to 21 November in Rennes, France, on Contrast and discrimination agents for NMR tissue characterization'. The first objective of the workshop was an evaluation of the future potential of MRI contrast agents according to the evolution of diagnostic use of MRI in Europe, and new kinds of possible contrast agents. The second objective was an attempt to standardize the methodology for conception and laboratory evaluation of new contrast agents in order to facilitate the exchange of information and results. Main topics were: physical basis, NMR parameters (relaxivity, contrast enhancement), chemical stability, toxicity, pharmacokinetics, new kinds of agents (metal chelates, free radicals, monocional antibodies, microcapsules, liposomes, etc.) and preliminary clinical evaluation. For all these topics, the main purpose is the evaluation of the used research methodology and standardized protocols proposal.
