Abstract

By end of September 1987 a very severe radiological accident with a 1350 Ci Cs-137 therapy unit occurred, when the head of this unit was removed from an abandoned private hospital in Goiania City, Brazil, and destroyed, contaminating people and several areas of the city. The accident is described and information given on the patients, characterization and isolation of contaminated areas, the preparatory works for cleaning-up the areas and decontamination, the cleaning-up and decontamination operations in Goiania City, the occupational exposure of persons involved in the operations, on environmental monitoring and results, the manpower used in the operations and on the final controls to verify compliance of the cleaning-up and decontamination operations with the adopted dose-limits.
