  • PROGRESS REPORT ON THE RESEARCH ACTIVITY - INTELLIGENT INTERFACE FOR DATA BASE INTERROGATION BY MAKING USE OF FUZZY SETS AND POSSIBILITY THEORY

Abstract

As an approach to the development of a data bank of component reliability parameters by making of fuzzy sets and possibility theory, a program has been studied in collaboration with the Toulouse Paul Sabatier University. This program is to be regarded as a first step for the development of an intelligent interface capable of interrogating databases representing heterogeneous sources of component reliability parameters and of giving a unique answer to a request expressed in a language allowing the use of fuzzy attributes for the identification of both the component engineering characteristics and the failure-mode considered. This multi-source interrogation system should then be able to fuse the parameter estimates obtained from the various sources, taking into account the relative reliability assigned as a weight to each source. Implementation of a program for the interrogation of one specific source of reliability parameter is being performed, with reference to one specific component family. The source chosen is represented by the IEEE ST 500 tables of reliability parameters for electric motors. This source can be regarded as an incomplete database (data are given only for some specific component types). The program is conceived as an expert system, capable of handling entities identified by fuzzy attributes, consisting of a database (storing the contents of the IEEE tables), a rule-base and inference (according to fuzzy pattern matching techniques) and query modules; the rule base provides the information necessary for the interpretation of fuzzy phrases and the inference of new failure rates from those given by the tables. The way of interrogating the CEDB (the Component Event Data Bank of the European Reliability Data System) which in perspective should be the main source of reliability parameters will in addition be considered.
