MSCT AND HEAT - COMPUTER CODES FOR SIMULATION OF MULTISCATTERING AND THERMAL DISSIPATION OF CHARGED PARTICLE BEAMS IN MULTIPLE THIN METALLIC TARGETS
In order to produce the generator "rm 195m,g"Hg/"rm 195m"Au for myocardial studies via Au (p,3n) nuclear reactions induced in a cyclotron, an on- line irradiation/thermal method is used based on the irradiation of a stack of 15 gold sheets, each 50 mum thick, in order to obtain an on-line separation of the "rm 195m,195g"Hg from the gold, using the thermal power dissipated by the proton beam itself into the target. In order to make a correct prediction of the thermal profile induced by the beam on the various sheets, a computer code named HEAT has been developed. A second code named MSCT based on a Monte Carlo simulation has been developed in order to evaluate the proton beam profile. The MSCT code uses the HEAT code as a subroutine giving at the same time both the beam and temperature profiles on the various sheets of the multitarget.
