Abstract

Phytosanitary defence is of importance in restricting pest populations and diseases. As a result of the concern which has emerged at Member Country level, the programme which the CEC is carrying out is thus oriented to Integrated Pest Management. It involves common activities, on the basis of research contracts and coordinated activities, which take the form of scientific or technical meetings, debates on specific themes, training courses, exchanges of researchers and the transfer of knowledge from the research laboratory first to pilot projects and then to practical realisation in the field of protected crops. About ten actions are underway, performed by Member Countries. These countries work closely together, such as France and Italy, who are working for the Mediterranean environment on unheated plastic greenhouses, or Great Britain and Ireland for northern Europe on heated glass greenhouses. More emphasis has been given to actions of coordination, where there have already been a great number of exchanges of researchers between research centres, and a training course at Ghent (B), which was followed by many participants from 12 countries.
