Abstract

In 1980 the European Communities and the Federal Research and Technology Minister entrusted the Federal Sports Institute with the task of managing a demonstration project on the rational use of energy in swimming baths involving six pools in the Federal Republic of Germany. The programme involved: item"(i)" solar equipment for pool water heating, item"(ii)" pool covers to reduce heat losses, item"(iii)" equipment for heat recovery from water from the filters and the showers and from exit air.ab All the data needed in order to assess the efficiency of the equipment were collected by means of electronic data- processing over the last two years of operation and evaluated with the assistance of experts. The project was carried out in two stages. The report gives a description of the second stage with the pools of Inzell and Uelzen. A detailed description is given of the experience, the positive as well as the negative, acquired concerning the planning, construction and operation of the equipment in question. A number of further conclusions have been drawn from the experience acquired with regard to the design, realization and operation of future plants (solar heating systems, pool covers and heat-recovery systems) which confirm and complement those conclusions drawn from the first stage.
