"it Design and buildings:/" Eighteen new houses and 15 rehabilitated flats were designed by the Architects' Department of the London Borough of Lewisham with the South London Consortium Energy Group (SLCEG) acting as consultants. "it Results--New houses:/" By applying the measured values for the variables it has been shown that the measured consumption of 8240 kWh/year represents a 64% saving over current building regulations themal standards. The mean internal temperature was 19.9circC. This was achieved at an extra capital cost of UKL 674 per house giving a simple pay-back period of 4.9 years (at the 1985 gas price of UKL 0.011/kWh). "it Results--Rehabilitated flats:/" The mean temperature over the heating season was 19.4circC and the mean energy consumption for space heating per flat was 14 813 kWh. The calculated consumption for a standard rehabilitation of the dwellings is 30 616 kWh per flat, showing a saving of 52% (15 803 kWh) for the energy- efficient rehabilitation. The additional capital cost (average) per flat was UKL 955 giving a pay-back period of 5.5 years (at the 1985 gas price of UKL 0.011/kWh.) "it Results of the demonstration:/" Analysis of the questionnaires completed by the 1300 visitors to the demonstration suite showed that 58% of the building designers intended to give a higher priority to energy efficiency in their future designs. The three SLC boroughs instituted a procedure whereby all rehabilitated and newly built houses have a Design energy-consumption certificate'' prepared as part of the design process. During 1985/86, 190 certificates were produced covering 1200 dwellings, both rehabilitated and newly built, and it is estimated that the resultant energy savings are in the region of 1.4 million kWh (5000 GJ) per annum. The certification procedure is continuing and therefore this figure will increase each year.
