Abstract

The FAST programme has launched a research activity on "it new materials/" with the aim of getting a grip on future challenges for science and technology policies and for European industrial competition in the world context linked with innovation in the field of materials and to evaluate the socio-economic repercussions (namely employment and qualifications). This research has been carried out by the BETA Institute of the Strasbourg University. In the planning of the FAST activities, a contact has already been established with the Stichting Teokomstbeeld der Techniek'' (STT) and its ongoing survey on new applications of new materials with a special focus on structural materials for design purposes. The outcome of this survey, guided by high-level Dutch experts in the field of materials sciences, has lead FAST exceptionally to fund an English translation to make the results available to a broader section of the public.
