SEMIAUTOMATIC TRANSCODING SYSTEM APPLIED TO ERDS
The paper discusses an attempt of using artificial intelligence (A.I.) techniques (knowledge-based systems) in the field of reliability databases. The project concerns the development of a generalized semi-automatic transcoding system, applied to the case of the European Reliability Data System--ERDS, that is a complex system formed of three databases loosely coupled and implemented in Adabas. ERDS receives data from various national data systems using different methodologies, structures and classifications to represent the same information entities. The manual transcoding of huge amounts of data from the national databases to the corresponding ERDS databases is a very time-consuming task which requires a great deal of expertise. In the paper the overall architecture of the system is presented and its main features are outlined. The different types of knowledge of the system and their representation are then illustrated. The system is being implemented on Adabas with Natural and Cobol as programming languages on an Amdhal 5868S under OS/MVS. The state of the project is given at the end.
