BASIC AND ADVANCED DIAGNOSTIC TECHNIQUES FOR FUSION PLASMAS
Progress in fusion research has been limited to a considerable extent by the difficulties of measuring the relevant plasma parameters. Thus the development and application of diagnostic methods is of fundamental importance. In the past two decades there have been major advances in diagnostic techniques, both in the development of new methods and in the application of existing ones with increased sophistication. A major factor has been the rapid introduction of data acquisition and data processing systems which permit the recording and analysis of large amounts of information. There are however still many important gaps in our measurement capability and many plasma parameters remain badly diagnosed. These Proceedings provide a review of the 1986 state-of- the-art of basic and advanced fusion plasma diagnostics in the magnetic and inertial fusion schemes. They include introductory lectures on all of the basic techniques as well as more advanced papers dealing with their applications, also of interest to Industry. The discussions of this School are aimed at developing new methods of diagnostics. The Course and Workshop show the incidence of advance in atomic and nuclear physics on plasma diagnostics.
