Abstract

A new Lower Hybrid heating system at 8 GHz has been tested in a series of experiments in FT. Coupling characteristics and plasma heating have been investigated. Very high power density (sim 10 kW/cm2) has been obtained which corresponds to a coupled RF power of 220 kW. Effects of plasma heating have been observed up to a density of 3.5times10"14" cm"-3", which indicates direct electron absorption of RF power. No ion tails have been observed and decay instabilities may be avoided at relatively high plasma current.
