Abstract

Tests were performed with Li and various Li-Pb alloys with respect to their behaviour on air and in combination with design materials of the fusion reactor at high temperature. The main aim was to study the behaviour of Li-"17"Pb-"83" from the plant operation safety point of view. Repeating tests with Li-"17"Pb-"83" and Li-"50"Pb-"50" up to sim 450circC on air and in combination with different materials for thermal insulation did not show visible reactions. At sim 800circC, Li-"50"Pb-"50" showed some slow reaction with quartz and magnesium-calcium-oxide base materials, whereas the reaction with Li-"17"Pb-"83" was still negligible. As far as Li and Li-7Pb-2 are concerned, when heated above their melting point, moderate reactions were observed in stainless steel containers.
