Abstract

The paper describes the differences between fission and fusion, pointing out the extent and the limits of the similarity in the two cases. Preliminary calculations have been made on the geometry of NET for a decay heat due to ten years of nominal running with a load factor of 25%. The analysis has shown a great sensitivity of the temperature transient to the radiation effects. This happens because of the thin structures of the plasma facing components; in fact, the radiating surface is great if compared to the heat generating volume. To describe heat radiation effects, a model has been set up. It accounts for the whole segment (i.e. the first wall, the five rows of breeding blanket and the back plate) and the vacuum vessel. By means of the model the temperature transients on the reactor internals have been calculated for the following accident scenarios: item - loss of flow in the first wall item - loss of flow in the breeding blanket item - loss of flow in the whole segment item - loss of flow in the whole reactorpar Only in the case of loss of flow in the whole reactor and assuming adiabatic conditions at the Torus boundary the melting temperatures are passed in all the structures after about 200 hours. The results obtained allow the following preliminary conclusions: item - no major safety problem rises in the plasma facing components if cooling of the toroidal vacuum vessel is assured item - melting could happen only if a LOCA in the whole reactor occurs and the vacuum vessel is thermally insulated; this configuration must be avoided taking into account, at the design stage, the possibility of an active or passive cooling of the toroidal chamber.par
