Abstract

THIS IS THE FINAL REPORT OF 4 WORKSHOPS HELD BY THE DGVI STRAW GROUP, AS PART OF THE EEC PROGRAMME 'ENERGY AND AGRICULTURE'. THE STRAW GROUP CONSIDERED THE LOGISTICS AND MARKET IMPLICATIONS OF USING STRAW AS AN ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCE, AND THE PROMOTION OF CLOSER CO-OPERATION BETWEEN INDUSTRY AND UNIVERSITIES IN IMPROVING THE USE OF STRAW. THE STUDY CONCENTRATED ON ENERGY END-USERS OR THOSE DIRECTLY LINKED WITH AGRICULTURE. THE PRESENT USE OF STRAW IN EEC COUNTRIES WAS OUTLINED. PRIORITY AREAS FOR R & D IN MORE EFFICIENT USES OF STRAW WERE ECONOMICS STUDIES, CONSIDERATION OF USE AS FUEL OR AS ANIMAL FEED. TO IMPROVE THE VIABILITY OF STRAW AS A FUEL, RESEARCH SHOULD CONCENTRATE ON THE HANDLING AND TRANSPORT OF STRAW AND ON FURNACE DESIGN. IN THE SHORT TERM, DIRECT COMBUSTION IS THE ONLY FINANCIALLY VIABLE ALTERNATIVE ON FARMS, IN RURAL INDUSTRIES OR DISTRICT HEATING SYSTEMS. CHEMICAL UP GRADING OF STRAW FOR ANIMAL FEED IS WORTHY OF INVESTIGATION.
