Résumé

ALMOND SEVERAL PAPERS REPORTED THE PROGRESS MADE ON SELF-COMPATIBILITY. THE RESEARCH AND HYBRIDIZATION PROGRAMMES AIMED AT BREEDING SELF-POLLINATING VARIETIES WERE ABOUT TO BEAR FRUIT, AS THE FIRST PRESELECTIONS HAD BEEN PLANTED THE PREVIOUS WINTER. EXCHANGES OF GENITORS, TECHNIQUES AND METHODS ENABLED THE TEAMS OF THE DIFFERENT MEMBER STATES TO MAKE PROGRESS QUICKLY IN PARALLEL. SELF-COMPATIBILITY WAS NOT THE SOLUTION TO ALL THE PROBLEMS; INDEED, IT WOULD PROBABLY GENERATE OTHERS. THESE TREES, EXTREMELY PRODUCTIVE BECAUSE THEY WERE VERY WELL FERTILISED WOULD REQUIRE MORE NUTRIMENTS AND DIFFERENT CULTIVATION TECHNIQUES. CONTINUED COLLABORATION BETWEEN RESEARCH TEAMS WOULD REMAIN INDISPENSABLE. PISTACHIO ABOUT AS MUCH WAS KNOWN ABOUT THIS SPECIES, AS WAS KNOWN ABOUT THE ALMOND IN 1970. EXPERIMENTATION HAD HARDLY BEGUN. THANKS TO THE KNOW-HOW GAINED WITH THE ALMOND, THE PRELIMINARY STAGES SHOULD PROGRESS QUICKLY.
