Abstract

THE VERY DAMAGING MITE VARROA JACOBSONI OUD., A PEST OF BEES, MAY AFFECT AGRICULTURAL CROPS AND POLLINATION PROGRAMMES. RESEARCH STUDIES RANGE FROM THE BIOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR OF THE MITE TO THE WAYS OF DIFFUSION, THE QUICK IDENTIFICATION OF VARROATOSIS IN BEEHIVES, THE ROLE OF SEMIO-CHEMICALS IN HOST DETECTION, AND SECONDARY INFECTION MICRO-ORGANISMS. CONTROL METHODS UNDER INVESTIGATION INCLUDE THERAPEUTIC MEANS USING VARROA ATTRACTIVE OR REPELLENT BAITS, THE USE OF PATHOGENS, PHYSICAL TREATMENTS AND CHEMICAL PRODUCTS WITHOUT NEGATIVE SIDE EFFECTS ON THE BEE AND ITS PRODUCTS.
