Abstract

COMPETITION IN INTERNATIONAL MARKETS REQUIRES RAPIDLY AVAILABLE STANDARDISED INFORMATION ON A SUPRANATIONAL SCALE, CONCERNING ACREAGE AND PRODUCTION VALUES. TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES IN REMOTE SENSING OFFERS A SOLUTION. IT IS CAPABLE OF IMPROVING THE ACCURACY, SPEED AND UNIFORMITY OF INVENTORY METHODS. FORECASTING BY HIGH-RESOLUTION SATELLITES HAS NOT BEEN PROVED FINANCIALLY VIABLE IN PRACTICE. THE ROLE OF LOW-RESOLUTION SATELLITES IS STILL UNDER ESTIMATED IN YIELD FORECASTING AND EARLY WARNING SYSTEMS. SPECTRAL AND TIME RESOLUTION SHOULD BE PREFERRED TO SPATIAL RESOLUTION.
