Abstract

THE TEST SITES NETWORK IS PLANNED TO GIVE INFORMATION ON ACREAGES AND YIELDS OF CROPS FROM REMOTE SENSING SATELLITE DATA. THE TEST SITES ARE RELATED TO EACH ACTIVITY OF THE PILOT PROJECT AND THE METHODOLOGY AND SAMPLING STRATEGIES OF EACH ARE OUTLINED. THE FIRST SET OF FIFTY SITES WERE ALLOCATED ACCORDING TO THE AMOUNT OF ANNUAL CROPS OF EACH STATE. THESE SITES ARE PLACED REGULARLY ON THE SPOT GRID; MOST OF THEM ARE COVERED BY A LANDSAT QUARTER SCENE WITH A DATA ACQUISITION PERIOD OF 8 DAYS. THE SECOND SET OF THIRTY SITES COVER THE PERMANENT CROPS OF MEDITERRANEAN REGIONS, IN SUCH A WAY THAT INITIALLY ACREAGES AND LATER PRODUCTIONS OF VINEYARDS AND OLIVE GROWING CAN BE ESTIMATED.
