Abstract

INDUCTIVITY COUPLED PLASMA MASS SPECTROMETRY (ICP-MS) IS A POWERFUL TECHNIQUE WHICH COMBINES THE HIGH SENSITIVITY AND THE RESOLUTION POWER OF MASS SPECTROMETRY WITH CAPABILITY OF SIMULTANEOUS ELEMENTAL ANALYSIS. FURTHERMORE, IT ENABLES VERY RAPID ISOTOPE RATIO DETERMINATIONS. ACCURATE RESULTS CAN BE OBTAINED AT TRACE LEVEL (EG. PPB) BY EXTERNAL CALIBRATION, STANDARD ADDITIONS AND ISOTOPE DILUTION TECHNIQUE. THE RESULTS OBTAINED AT JRC-ISPRA BY THE LATTER TECHNIQUE ARE UNDER COMPARISON WITH THOSE OF THE ISOTOPE DILUTION THERMOIONIZATION MASS SPECTROMETRY ON BIOLOGICAL RICES AND THE RESULTS SEEM TO BE VERY PROMISING. AN OVERVIEW OF INVESTIGATIONS IN NUCLEAR, ENVIRONMENTAL, FORENSIC AND BIOLOGICAL FIELDS IS GIVEN AND THE PRESENT ACHIEVEMENTS AND LIMITATIONS DISCUSSED. AS THE FIRST USES OF RELIABLE COMMERCIAL INSTRUMENTS ARE JUST BEGINNING FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF THESE INSTRUMENTS, BOTH IN RESPECT OF ENGINEERING HARDWARE AND IN IMPROVEMENT OF THE COMPUTER WARE, MAY BE EXPECTED. THE FUTURE PROSPECTS AND THE DEVELOPMENTS PLANNED AT JRC-ISPRA ARE PRESENTED.
