Abstract

THE CHEMICAL COMPOSITION AND THE REDOX PROPERTIES OF THE GROUNDWATER CONTROL THE MAXIMUM CONCENTRATION AND THE SOLUTION SPECIES OF TRANSURANICS LEACHED FROM THE NUCLEAR WASTE MATRIX, AND THEIR INTERACTIONS WITH THE WASTE COMPONENTS. THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY WAS TO INVESTIGATE THE EFFECTS OF CONTROLLED CONDITIONS ON THE LEACHING BEHAVIOUR OF RADIONUCLIDE DOPED GLASSESS AND ON THE CHEMICAL FORMS IN WHICH ACTINIDES MIGHT BE TRANSPORTED WITHIN THE REPOSITORY ENVIRONMENT. THE LEACHING STUDIES WERE CONDUCTED USING BOROSILICATE GLASS BEADS CONTAINING 241-AM, 237-NP AND 238-PU. THE EH, PH AND IONIC STRENGTH WERE SOME OF THE PARAMETERS DIFFERENTIATING THE GROUNDWATERS USED AS THE LEACHANTS. A DIFFERENCE IN LEACHABILITY WAS NOTICED WHEN USING EITHER SATURATED BRINE (PH~6) OR BICARBONATE GROUNDWATER (PH 8.4), THE FIRST SOLUTION BEING LESS CORROSIVE. IN THE BICARBONATE GROUNDWATER THE LEACH-R WERE FOUND TO INCREASE IN THE ORDER PU~AM<NP UNDER OXIC CONDITIONS. A REVERSED ORDER WAS OBTAINED IN A REDUCING ENVIRONMENT. IN THIS CASE, A SIGNIFICANT PORTION OF PU WAS FOUND TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH SUSPENDED PARTICULATE MATTER.
