Riassunto

THE DEMAND FOR ANALYSIS OF COMPLEX MIXTURES SUCH AS HAZARDOUS AND TOXIC WASTES LED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF APPROPRIATE EXTRACTION AND CLEANUP METHODS AND TO THE USE OF ADVANCED AND SOPHISTICATED INSTRUMENTATION. MODERN COMPUTER-CONTROLLED MASS SPECTROMETERS PROVIDE FAST AND ACCURATE ANALYSIS AND, IN CONJUNCTION WITH ANCILLARY TECHNIQUES SUCH AS GC AND LC, CAN SEPARATE ISOMERS AND ISOTOPES, PROVIDING INFORMATION ON THE STRUCTURAL FORMULAE AND ON THE COMPOSITION OF COMPLEX MIXTURES. NEW TECHNIQUES SUCH AS CONTINUOUS FLOW FAB AND SUPERCRITICAL FLUID CHROMATOGRAPHY - MASS SPECTROMETRY EXTEND THE RANGE OF COMPOUNDS ACCESSIBLE TO MASS SPECTROMETRIC ANALYSIS, ESPECIALLY IN THE MONITORING OF ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS.
