Abstract

TO DATE MICROWAVE EXPERIMENTS HAVE BEEN UNDERTAKEN USING A VARIETY OF SENSORS AND PLATFORMS. AS A RESULT A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF MICROWAVE DATA ARE AVAILABLE FOR RESEARCH PURPOSES, ESPECIALLY WITHIN EUROPE. HOWEVER THESE DATA ARE DISPARATE AND HAVE BEEN COLLECTED IN AN UNCO-ORDINATED MANNER USING, IN MANY CASES, INCOMPATIBLE DATA COLLECTION TECHNIQUES. AS A RESULT THESE DATA HAVE NOT BEEN FULLY EXAMINED, EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE SIGNIFICANT ADVANCES STILL TO BE MADE IN PREPARATION FOR THE LAUNCH OF A SERIES OF MICROWAVE BASED EARTH OBSERVATION SATELLITES (ERS-1, JERS-1, RADARSAT). IN ORDER TO BEGIN TO ADDRESS THESE PROBLEMS A EUROPEAN RADAR CROSS SECTION (RCS) DATABASE, EURACS, IS CURRENTLY BEING DEVELOPED. THIS PAPER OUTLINES THE PHILOSOPHY BEHIND THE DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF EURACS, AND DESCRIBES THE PRELIMINARY WORK THAT HAS BEEN UNDERTAKEN DURING THE EUROPEAN AGRISAR 1986 AND AGRISCATT 1987 AIRBORNE MICROWAVE CAMPAIGN. IT ALSO DESCRIBES POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS OF EURACS.
