Abstract

THIS PAPER REVIEWS PROBLEMS AND ASSOCIATED STUDIES LINKED TO THE RELEASE AND FATE OF CHEMICAL POLLUTANTS IN THE ENVIRONMENT. FOR THE CASE OF INORGANIC CONTAMINANTS, THE IMPACT ON GROUNDWATER OF THE HEAVY METALS LEACHED FROM FLY ASHES DEPOSITS IS DISCUSSED IN DETAIL AS A CASE STUDY CARRIED OUT AT THE JRC ISPRA. FOR ORGANIC POLLUTANTS, THE PARAMETERS AFFECTING THEIR BIO-GEO-CHEMICAL BEHAVIOUR ARE DISCUSSED AND THE PROGRAMME, PROPOSED BY THE JRC ON CHEMICAL WASTE, PRESENTED. THE MODELLING ASPECTS ARE ALSO BRIEFLY ILLUSTRATED AS WELL AS THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY POLICY FOR GROUND WATER PROTECTION.
