Abstract

THIS ARTICLE REPORTS ON RESEARCH IN WHICH THREE METHODS WERE USED TO OBTAIN THE RESULTS : - IN SITU GEOLOGICAL RESEARCH - EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH IN THE LABORATORY - THEORETICAL NUMERICAL STUDY NUMERICAL MODELLING WAS USED TO DISCOVER THE DISLOCATION VALUE AT WHICH THE PROPAGATION OF SHEAR BANDS MIGHT TAKE PLACE. THE EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAMME INVOLVED INVESTIGATION OF THE RESPONSE OF CLAYS UNDER HIGH PRESSURE, AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF A PLANE STRAIN SHEAR BOX WITH MOVABLE BASE. IN SITU OBSERVATIONS OF FRACTURE PROPAGATION IN CLAY HAVE LED TO THE PRELIMINARY CONCLUSION THAT, AT LEAST NEAR THE SURFACE, THE GREY-BLUE CLAYS OF THE PLIOPLEISTOCENIC PERIOD ARE ALWAYS INTERSECTED BY A NETWORK OF FISSURES, AND THAT SOME OF THE FISSURES, NEAR THE SURFACE, CAN SHOW OXIDATION ON CONTACT WITH AIR AND WATER.
