Abstract

THE RACE PROGRAMME IS FOCUSED ON INTEGRATED BROADBAND COMMUNICATIONS (IBC) AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF TECHNOLOGY FOR INTRODUCTION OF COMMERCIAL IBC SERVICES IN 1995. WITHIN ITS FRAMEWORK, ABOUT 1000 LEADING EXPERTS ARE COLLABORATING IN 46 PROJECTS. TELECOMMUNICATIONS NETWORK OPERATORS IN THE COMMUNITY AND EFTA COUNTRIES, ALL MAJOR EUROPEAN TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURERS, MOST MAJOR RESEARCH ESTABLISHMENTS, MANY SMALL ENTERPRISES AND NUMEROUS UNIVERSITIES ARE COLLABORATING IN JOINT TEAMS, SHARING WORK, EXPERIENCES AND RESULTS. THE USEFULNESS OF TELECOMMUNICATION SERVICES DEPENDS ON WIDE SPREAD ACCEPTANCE. THEREFORE, RACE INVOLVES SPECIAL ACTIVITIES TO STIMULATE THE DIALOGUE BETWEEN TECHNOLOGISTS, NETWORK OPERATORS, SERVICE PROVIDERS AND USERS TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE EMERGENCE OF A BROAD CONSENSUS ON REQUIREMENTS AND OBJECTIVES. RACE IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND STANDARDISATION ACTIVITIES OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY LEADING TOWARDS COMPLETION OF THE INTERNAL MARKET IN 1992.
