Abstract

THE WORKSHOP REPORTED IS THE SECOND OF A SERIES, PART OF PROJECT COST-84-BIS, "USE OF LIGNOCELLULOSE CONTAINING BY-PRODUCTS AND OTHER PLANT RESIDUES FOR ANIMAL FEEDING". THERE IS A LARGE AMOUNT OF UNEXPLOITED LIGNOCELLULOSIC BY-PRODUCTS IN THE EEC. WHITE ROT FUNGI CAN BE USED TO CONVERT LIGNOCELLUSOSIC WASTES TO EDIBLE FUNGI IN GENERAL AND TO MUSHROOMS IN PARTICULAR. WHITE ROT CAN ALSO BE USED TO PRODUCE ANIMAL FEEDS, ENZYMES AND CHEMICALS FROM LIGNOCELLULOSIC BY-PRODUCTS. SOLID STATE FERMENTATION IS AN IMPORTANT METHOD FOR TREATMENT OF LIGNOCELLULOSIC MATERIALS. THE WORKSHOP RECOMMENDED THE APPLICATION OF NEW GENETIC TECHNOLOGY TO WHITE ROT TO ALLOW THE DEVELOPMENT OF NOVEL STRAINS WITH IMPROVED ECONOMIC VIABILITY OF EXISTING PROCESSES. SUBSTRATES USED FOR BIOCONVERSION REQUIRE DETAILED ANALYSIS TO ALLOW MORE RATIONAL USE OF LIGNOCELLULOSE WASTES. ANIMAL FEEDS PRODUCED BY USED OF WHITE ROT FUNGI NEED MORE DETAILED ANALYSIS AND TOXICOLOGICAL ANALYSIS. ECONOMIC ANALYSIS SHOULD BE USED TO MONITOR THE PROCESSES FOR FEED, CHEMICAL AND ENZYME PRODUCTION, PAPER PRODUCTS AND WASTE TREATMENTS TO IDENTIFY THE MAIN CONSTRAINTS WHICH ARE LEADING TO UNCOMPETITIVE MARKET PRICES.
