Abstract

THE EXPERIMENTAL FACILITY FIRES AT THE JRC-ISPRA HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO PROVIDE DATA ON CHEMICAL REACTIONS UNDERGOING RUNAWAY CONDITIONS. IN THIS REPORT THE MAIN SAFETY CRITERIA APPLIED TO THE PLANT AS DISCUSSED. IN PARTICULAR THE RESPONSE OF THE CONTAINMENT VESSEL TO THE EXPLOSION OF A TNT "EQUIVALENT" CHARGE REPRESENTING THE WORST CREDIBLE ACCIDENT AFFECTING THE CHEMICAL REACTOR, IS DESCRIBED THROUGH 2D FLUID/STRUCTURE CALCULATIONS PERFORMED WITH THE COMPUTER CODE SEURBNUK. FURTHERMORE, THE VENTING LINE SIZING OBTAINED WITH THE APPLICATION OF THE DIERS METHODOLOGY (NOMOGRAMS, SAFIRE) IS ILLUSTRATED.
