Abstract

IN THE FRAME OF THIS PROJECT, TRAP OXIDISER SYSTEMS BASED ON THE CORNING GLASS EX-47, 5.66" X 6" CERAMIC MONOLITH WERE DEVELOPED AND TESTED. THE SYSTEMS WERE INSTALLED ON A MERCEDES 200D VEHICLE AND THE FORCED REGENERATION TECHNIQUE BY EXHAUST GAS THROTTLING WAS APPLIED. TEST ON A CHASSIS DYNAMOMETER, AS WELL AS ON-ROAD TESTS, ESTABLISHED THE BEST SYSTEM TO BE THAT OF THE CATALYTICALLY-COATED TRAP. THIS SYSTEM ENSURES REGENERATION UNDER ANY TRAFFIC CONDITIONS. THE USE OF A REGENERATION RATE CONTROL TECHNIQUE, BY BY-PASSING THE TRAP, SUCCESSFULLY PROTECTS THE TRAP AGAINST OVERHEATING AND RESULTS IN INCREASED RELIABILITY AND AN EXTENDED LIFE FOR THE SYSTEM. AN ELECTRONIC UNIT CONTROLS THE FORCED REGENERATION PROCESS. THIS UNIT, TOGETHER WITH A KICK DOWN OPERATION, ALLOWS THROTTLING INTERRUPTION AND FULL-THROTTLE OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE, WHEN REQUIRED BY TRAFFIC CONDITIONS. THIS FORCED REGENERATION SYSTEM, THEREFORE MEETS THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR INSTALLATION ON BOTH NEW AND IN-USE VEHICLES.
