Abstract

A DESIGN STUDY FOR A NEW SYSTEM FOR UNLOADING COAL FROM SHIPS AND TRANSPORTING IT TO THE POINT OF USE IN SLURRY FORM HAS BEEN UNDERTAKEN. THE HANDLING OF SLURRIED BULK SOLIDS IS A CONTINUOUS PROCESS WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR VERY HIGH UNLOADING ACTIVITIES COMBINED WITH LOW INFRASTRUCTURAL INVESTMENTS. THE SYSTEM COMPRISES THREE SECTIONS WHERE THE FOLLOWING SEQUENTIAL OPERATIONS TAKE PLACE : - SHIP UNLOADING : COARSE, DRY COAL IN THE SHIP'S HOLD IS CONVERTED INTO A SLURRY BY WATER JETS, AND THE SLURRY IS PUMPED ASHORE VIA A FLOATING PIPELINE; - SLURRY STORAGE AND RECLAIMING : THE COAL IS DUMPED INTO A POND WHERE IT IS STORED UNDER WATER AND LATER RECOVERED BY A TRAVELLING SLURRY DUMPER/RECLAIMER FOR TRANSFER TO THE POINT OF USE, WHERE IT IS DEWATERED. - DEWATERING : THE COAL IS DEWATERED BY MECHANICAL DEVICES SUCH AS SCREENS AND CENTRIFUGES. THE WATER SYSTEM OPERATES IN A CLOSED LOOP IN THE UNLOADING, DUMPING AND RECLAIMING/DEWATERING OPERATIONS. THE SYSTEM ENABLES SHIPS TO BE UNLOADED OFFSHORE AND ELIMINATES POLLUTION BY COAL DUST. IT COULD BE SUITABLE FOR USE IN LOCATIONS WHERE CONVENTIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE FOR TRANSSHIPMENT DOES NOT EXIST, AND WHERE LOCAL CONDITIONS DO NOT FAVOUR THE MOVEMENT OF DRY COAL.
