Abstract

THIS REPORT INVESTIGATES THE POSSIBILITY OF PRODUCING HYDROGEN BY ELECTROLYSIS IN COUNTRIES WHERE CHEAP HYDRO-ELECTRICITY IS AVAILABLE AND TRANSPORTING IT BY SEA TO EUROPE AT LOWER TOTAL COST THAN THAT OF HYDROGEN PRODUCED IN EUROPE. SHIPS SUITABLE FOR THE TRANSPORT OF LIQUID HYDROGEN IN BULK ARE NOT AVAILABLE AT PRESENT. IT IS PROPOSED TO CONVERT GASEOUS HYDROGEN TO LIQUID BENZENE OR CYCLOHEXANE BY HYDROGENATION. THESE LIQUIDS COULD BE CARRIED BY CONVENTIONAL SHIPS AND TREATED BY DEHYDROGENATION ON ARRIVAL IN EUROPE. THE REPORT INVESTIGATES THE TECHNICAL SYSTEMS AND PLANTS REQUIRED FOR EACH STAGE OF THE PROCESS. A DETAILED ANALYSIS OF COSTS IS MADE. THE REPORT CONCLUDES THAT DESPITE SOME APPROXIMATIONS AND OMISSIONS IN THE CALCULATIONS THE PROCESS COULD BE COST-EFFECTIVE. THE SOLIDIFICATION OF BOTH LIQUIDS AT EUROPEAN WINTER TEMPERATURES REMAINS A PROBLEM. THE DANGERS IN TRANSPORTATION OF BENZENE DUE TO ITS INFLAMMABILITY AND RISK OF MARINE POLLUTION IN TANK CLEANING OR DEBALLASTING OPERATIONS REQUIRE SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS.
