Abstract

THIS REPORT COMBINES THE PAPERS GIVEN DURING A MEETING OF A GROUP OF EXPERTS FROM THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY IN MONTPELLIER IN MAY 1985 ON THE PROBLEMS POSED BY APHIDS IN THE CONTEXT OF THE SETTING UP OF THE "EURAPHID" NETWORK. THE NETWORK AIMS TO IMPLEMENT A FORECASTING SYSTEM FOR APHID INFESTATIONS THROUGH SUCTION TRAPS, USING STANDARDISED METHODOLOGIES THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY. THIS GATHERING OF EXPERTS FACILITATED THE PRESENTATION, COMPARISON AND DISCUSSION OF INDIVIDUAL RESULTS AS WELL AS THE EXCHANGE OF IDEAS AND VARIOUS EXPERIMENTS. SUBJECTS CONSIDERED RELATE TO ASPECTS OF BIOLOGY, ECOLOGY AND THE TAXONOMY OF THE PRINCIPAL THREATENING SPECIES, ON THEIR CAPTURE IN DIFFERENT SORTS OF TRAP AND ON THE IMPORTANCE OF THESE METHODS IN FORECASTING INFESTATION. IN ADDITION THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE ACTUAL NUMBERS OF APHIDS AND THE NUMBER OF TRAPPED SPECIMENS WAS CONSIDERED AS WELL AS THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO VIRAL EPIDEMICS. CONCLUSIONS REFER TO THE PROBLEMS OF SETTING UP A COMPUTER DATABASE AND HOW TO USE THIS IN AN EFFICIENT FIGHT AGAINST ALL KINDS OF APHIDS.
