Abstract

THE AIM OF THIS RESEARCH WAS TO COMPARE THE DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THREE CLADOCERA SPECIES : DAPHNIA MAGNA, SIMOCEPHALUS VETULUS AND PLEUROXUS TRUNCATUS. THE EXPERIMENT WAS CARRIED OUT UNDER CONSTANT LABORATORY CONDITIONS AND ENDED WHEN ALL INDIVIDUALS WERE DEAD. ANIMALS WERE FED WITH SCENEDESMUS SUSPICATUS (122.24X1.0 E3 CELLS/ML). THE RESULTS FOR SURVIVAL AND FERTILITY WERE ELABORATED BY APPLYING THE LIFE TABLE METHOD. FURTHERMORE, THE INTRINSIC RATE OF NATURAL INCREASE GROWTH RATES FOR EACH SPECIES WAS CALCULATED. IT HAS BEEN DEMONSTRATED THAT D. MAGNA, COMMONLY USED IN BIOTEST AS TYPICAL REPRESENTANT OF CRUSTACEA, DIFFERS IN LIFE CYCLE FROM THE OTHER INVESTIGATED SPECIES, ESPECIALLY FROM P TRUNCATUS.
