Abstract

X-RAY FLUORESCENCE SPECTROSCOPY (XRF) AND X-RAY POWDER DIFFRACTION (XRD) TECHNIQUES HAVE BEEN APPLIED TO THE CHARACTERISATION OF SAMPLES OF ENVIRONMENTAL INTEREST. ATMOSPHERIC PARTICULATE FRACTIONS COLLECTED ON FILTER PAPERS IN DIFFERENT AREAS HAVE BEEN ANALYSED FOR PB AND S. THESE AIR PARTICULATES WERE ALSO ANALYSED BY XRD FOR THE IDENTIFICATION OF THE CRYSTALLINE SPECIES. THE TRACE ELEMENT CONTENT OF INDOOR AND OUTDOOR TOTAL SUSPENDED PARTICULATE (TSP), HAS BEEN ANALYSED FOR SEVERAL HOMES. XRD STUDIES ON INDOOR DUST SAMPLES AND DIFFERENT HOUSEHOLD CLEANING/SCOURING AGENTS HAVE ALSO BEEN PERFORMED. SEVERAL SEDIMENT SAMPLES HAVE BEEN COLLECTED ALONG THE ITALIAN COAST. THESE SAMPLES WERE ANALYSED FOR THE HEAVY ELEMENTS : CO, CR, CU, FE, MN AND NI. BESIDES THE TOTAL METAL CONCENTRATION, LEACHING USING HCL 0.5N HAS ALSO BEEN CARRIED OUT, TO STUDY THE PARTITIONING OF THE ELEMENTS BETWEEN THE LATTICE-HELD AND THE NON-LATTICE HELD FRACTIONS OF THE SEDIMENT. FINALLY THE STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF A LAKE, RIVER AND SEA SEDIMENT, WERE OBTAINED BY XRD.
