Abstract

THE HARM CAUSED TO NATURAL ENVIRONMENTS IN THE SIXTIES HAS MADE IT NECESSARY FOR THE POLITICAL AND LEGISLATIVE AUTHORITIES OF INDUSTRIALLY DEVELOPED COUNTRIES TO INTRODUCE OR RENEW REGULATIONS TO PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT. THIS REPORT EXAMINES WHAT REGULATORY ACTIONS ARE NECESSARY FOR THE CONTROL AND PREVENTION OF WATER POLLUTION. THE WATER QUALITY CRITERIA FOR SOME WATER USES ARE SUMMARISED SO THAT THEY CAN BE READILY COMPARED AND ISSUED BY INTERNATIONAL AUTHORITIES. WITH REGARD TO POLLUTION OF INLAND WATERS IN ITALY, SOME POSSIBLE FUTURE RESEARCH LINES ARE IDENTIFIED AND DISCUSSED IN DETAIL. AN ANALYSIS OF THE USE OF SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE HAS BEEN MADE WITH THE AIM OF VERIFYING HOW FURTHER DEVELOPMENT MAY IMPROVE THE PRESENT METHODS FOR CONTROL OF POLLUTION, AND TO SHOW THE CONCRETE ROLE THAT SCIENCE CAN PLAY IN THIS PROCESS.
